Community Thoughts: CAFKA was an outdoor installation involving 8 works for CAFKA 18 that was created in collaboration with Kitchener-Waterloo’s Midtown Neighbourhood Group. The project began with a meeting, casual conversations, a ‘public question’ table at the Kitchener Farmer’s Market and dinners to collect thoughtful statements from community members about their neighbourhood. We then decided on the most poignant and whimsical quotes to be placed on sign works that are shaped like thought bubbles. The project displayed reflective statements about the community— created by the community. Harkening back to the "place your face in photo stand-ins," this project acts as an amusing photographic opportunity, animating and marking a moment in time. Community members can stand below the thought bubble of their choice and photograph themselves with friends and family. The work also creates experiences of discovery, conversation starters and a novel expression of the community’s internal sense of belonging.
